It was 1938 when Superman first appeared on DC Comics. From that time onwards, it has become a favorite character among children as well as adults due to its multitasking capabilities. This is what Super App does in the digital world. It is a single app developed by a company that offers multiple services under one roof. PhonePe, and Paytm are the two major examples of such apps.
But, the above apps provide services offered by different companies. They are just an aggregator platform. What if I tell you that Tata, Reliance, ITC, and Adani Group are planning to bring all their major offerings under one roof! Yes, it is true. How will it benefit them? Let’s dive in to know the details:
Reliance and Tata Group’s Progress about Super App
Reliance Industries and Tata Group are launching their super apps to offer their different sectors’ services under one roof. Both companies are also on an acquisition spree to provide all services for their customers. In short, Reliance, and Tata are trying to create a monopoly in the Indian business industry. It will be like an online shopping mall.
Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance Industries Limited has already consolidated many of its offerings like communications, grocery shopping, cloud storage, shopping, ticket bookings, digital content streaming under one app named Jio.
To strengthen its super app operations further, Reliance has acquired some business firms as well. Just Dial-local business search engine, NetMeds-online pharmacy, Milkbasket, and UrbanLadder are some of the major acquisitions done by Reliance to fulfill its dream of bringing all businesses under one roof.
While Tata Group is also showing positive progress under the Tata Digital platform to launch its Super app soon. To do so, Tata Digital has also acquired business firms including Big Basket-online grocery giant, Cultfit-online fitness platform, 1mg-online pharmacy platform, and Soulfull Cereals maker.
These acquisitions are done by Tata Group to diversify the super app offerings. Tata Digital is also on the way to raise $2-2.5 billion to fulfill its Super app dream. The super app will offer different consumer businesses of Tata under one digital roof. Reports suggest that a pilot project could be rolled out next month.
Adani and ITC Group are the New Entries in Super App War
ITC, one of the most profitable Indian firms, also confirmed on Wednesday that it is launching a super app named ITC MAARS. The firm is trying to fulfill all farmers’ needs under one umbrella by launching MAARS(Meta market for Advanced Agriculture and Rural Services). The firm will add other ITC services in MAARS. ITC targets more revenue by launching a single app solution for all its major services.
Adani Digital Labs, a subsidiary of Adani Group, is a new entry in the super app space, as the competition between Reliance and Tata heats up. While talking with the staff of the newly launched digital firm, Adani asked them to make it the “Ferrari of the digital world.”
Adani Group further revealed that the super app idea was showcased by two Adani Group employees through a mockup version. Gautam Adani agreed with the idea within 30 minutes to bring all Adani Group offerings including Adani airport, Adani Wilmar, Adani total gas, Adani electricity, among others under one app.
Currently, WeChat is the most popular super app worldwide. The Chinese platform was launched by offering messaging services and then added other products and services including payments, taxi bookings, online food ordering, and shopping, thus transforming into a super app.
